1957 Indianapolis 500

The 41st running of the Indianapolis 500 took place on May 30, 1957, at the famed Indianapolis Motor Speedway, drawing a crowd of enthusiastic spectators to witness one of the most storied events in American motorsport. After years of close calls and strong performances, veteran driver Sam Hanks finally broke through for victory in his 13th attempt, leading 136 of the 200 laps and finishing the 500 miles in a time of 3 hours, 41 minutes and 14 seconds at an average speed of 135.601 miles per hour. Hanks drove the distinctive “lay‑down” Offenhauser powered entry prepared by owner George Salih, a design that lowered the engine and improved handling, and his triumph brought him the first six‑figure winner’s purse in Indy history with more than $100,000 in earnings. Hanks’ win was a career capstone and he announced his retirement from Indianapolis competition in victory lane, a move celebrated by fans who had long awaited his breakthrough at the Speedway.

Behind Hanks, Jim Rathmann finished second, crossing the line about 21 seconds behind the leader, while defending USAC champion Jimmy Bryan drove to a third‑place finish to cap a strong showing for front‑running competitors. Other notable runners completed the full distance, with Paul Russo and Andy Linden rounding out the top five, underscoring the depth of talent in the field. The 1957 race was part of that year’s USAC National Championship Trail and illustrated the high level of competition and mechanical innovation of the era, as drivers and teams battled not only each other but also the rigors of the legendary 2.5‑mile oval.
