Floyd Marion Roberts (February 12, 1900 – May 30, 1939) was an American racing driver best known for winning the 1938 Indianapolis 500, the most prestigious event in AAA Championship Car racing. Driving the Lou Moore‑entered Burd Piston Ring Special, Roberts started from the pole, led 92 laps, and captured the victory with a then‑record average speed of 117.2 mph. His performance at the 1938 “500” also contributed to his AAA National Championship title that year.
Roberts made five Indianapolis 500 starts between 1935 and 1939, with consistent showings before his breakthrough win. Tragically, he was killed in a crash during the 1939 Indianapolis 500, becoming the first defending Indy 500 champion to die while competing. His car went over the outer wall at high speed following a multi‑car incident, and he later died of his injuries in the hospital. Roberts was inducted into the Auto Racing Hall of Fame in 1985 in recognition of his achievements.
