The week leading up to the race was far more turbulent than the 500 itself, particularly during the Twin 100-mile qualifying races on February 24, which significantly affected the starting field. Fireball Roberts set the pole position and won the first Twin 100, while Joe Weatherly captured the second. Both qualifying races, however, were marred by serious accidents. Most notably, Richard Petty crashed heavily during the first Twin 100, suffering a sprained ankle when his car went through the guardrail, forcing him to withdraw from the Daytona 500. His father, Lee Petty, was also involved in a violent crash during the second Twin 100, sustaining serious injuries that sidelined him from the main event. Despite the reduced field of experienced drivers, the Daytona 500 itself unfolded cleanly. Fireball Roberts dominated the race, leading 170 of 200 laps, but suffered an engine failure with 13 laps remaining. That allowed Marvin Panch, driving a Pontiac prepared by Smokey Yunick, to take the lead and hold it to the finish, earning his lone victory of the 1961 season. The contrast between the accident-filled Twin 100s and the incident-free Daytona 500 made the 1961 event unique, with the Petty family crashes standing out as one of the most consequential storylines of that year’s Speedweeks.
