1961 Other Major Events

The 1961 American road racing season was anchored by the SCCA National Sports Car Championship, which featured a wide variety of professional and amateur drivers competing across multiple classes on permanent road courses, temporary circuits, and airport-based tracks. The championship continued to grow in prestige, drawing increasing manufacturer and factory-backed participation, particularly from Chevrolet (Corvette), Porsche, Ferrari, and Jaguar. Among the year’s most prominent drivers were Roger Penske, Walt Hansgen, Jim Hall, Augie Pabst, Bob Holbert, and Briggs Cunningham, all of whom delivered strong performances throughout the season.

One of the most significant events was the 12 Hours of Sebring on March 25, where Phil Hill and Olivier Gendebien captured overall victory in a Ferrari 250 TRI/61, leading a Ferrari-dominated field in the opening round of the World Sportscar Championship, which also counted toward major U.S. sports car prestige. The grueling endurance contest again demonstrated the importance of mechanical reliability and endurance strategy on American soil.

Another highlight was the United States Grand Prix for Sports Cars at Watkins Glen, held on September 23, which attracted a strong international field and showcased high-speed prototype racing on the fast 2.35-mile road circuit. The event further cemented Watkins Glen’s reputation as America’s premier road racing venue and its importance on the global motorsports calendar.

The SCCA National Championship Runoffs, staged in October at Daytona International Speedway’s road course, brought together the nation’s top amateur and semi-professional drivers to contest national titles across multiple production and modified classes. The Runoffs marked the culmination of the American road racing season and underscored the rapid growth of organized sports car competition in the United States.

Throughout 1961, U.S. road course racing continued to expand in popularity and professionalism, bridging the gap between amateur club competition and elite international sports car racing. The season helped lay critical groundwork for the professional championships and endurance events that would emerge later in the decade, firmly establishing road racing as a major component of the American motorsports landscape.
