The Rebel 500, held on April 3, 1977, at Darlington Raceway in South Carolina, was the seventh race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series and featured a highly competitive 36-car field. David Pearson won the pole position, but the race saw frequent lead changes and intense battles throughout its 367 laps, with a total of 28 lead changes and six caution periods covering 39 laps. Drivers battled Darlington’s unique, abrasive surface, managing tire wear and handling issues on the notoriously challenging “Lady in Black.”
In the closing laps, a multi-car crash in Turn 4 brought out the caution with only a few laps remaining. Under the rules at the time, drivers were allowed to race back to the caution flag, and Darrell Waltrip, running just behind the leaders, surged past Donnie Allison and Richard Petty in a dramatic three-wide dash to the line. Waltrip crossed first and was declared the winner under caution, with Allison finishing second and Petty third. The race marked a key early-season victory for Waltrip and highlighted both the unpredictability of Darlington and the high level of competition in the 1977 NASCAR season.
