1929 Altoona Speedway (Sept)

The September 2nd AAA National Championship race at Altoona Speedway was another showcase of sustained speed on the 1¼-mile board track, coming just months after the season’s most tragic event there. Thirteen cars started the race, and Louis Meyer delivered a commanding performance, winning his third consecutive victory at Altoona and further cementing his dominance of the venue. Meyer averaged 112.556 mph and finished eight minutes ahead of the rest of the field, underscoring both his pace and the reliability of his machine. Fred Frame finished second, with Myron Stevens classified third, as attrition once again played a role on the demanding wooden surface. The race would stand as one of the final major championship events before the stock market crash just over a month later, a moment that would soon bring sweeping economic and cultural change far beyond the world of motor racing.
