The Richmond 400, the third race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, took place on Sunday, February 27, 1977, at Richmond Fairgrounds Raceway in Virginia. The event was scheduled for 400 laps around the 0.542-mile short track, but heavy rain forced officials to call it after just 245 laps. Cale Yarborough, driving the #11 Chevrolet for Junior Johnson & Associates, dominated the day and claimed the victory. Starting from seventh position, he led 161 of the completed laps and pulled away convincingly once he took the lead, building on the momentum from his Daytona 500 win earlier that month. Darrell Waltrip finished second in the #88 Chevrolet, with Benny Parsons taking third in the #72 Chevrolet. The rest of the top ten included Dave Marcis in fourth, Bobby Allison in fifth, Richard Petty in sixth, pole-sitter Neil Bonnett in seventh (who had led the first eight laps in his #71 Dodge), James Hylton in eighth, Buddy Baker in ninth, and Richard Childress in tenth. The race featured four caution periods covering 35 laps, and the average speed hovered around 73 mph.
