The 1977 Music City USA 420, the eleventh race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, was held on Saturday, May 7th, at Fairgrounds Speedway in Nashville, Tennessee. The event ran the full scheduled 420 laps on the 0.596-mile paved short track, with an average speed of 87.49 mph and a time of race of 2:51:40. Benny Parsons, driving the #72 Chevrolet for L.G. DeWitt, captured the victory in a thrilling finish. Parsons led 143 laps and edged out Cale Yarborough, who led 275 laps, by just one second—the closest margin in the track’s history. Pole-sitter Darrell Waltrip in the #88 Chevrolet led the first two laps but finished third, two laps behind. Finishing fourth was Dave Marcis followed by Richard Petty in fifth. Attendance was reported at 20,000, and the race featured three cautions for 27 laps along with three lead changes among the top contenders.
