The 1977 World 600, the thirteenth race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season, was held on May 29th at Charlotte Motor Speedway. The event ran the full scheduled 400 laps on the 1.5-mile high-banked oval, covering 600 miles, with an average speed of approximately 137.676 mph. Richard Petty, driving the #43 Dodge for Petty Enterprises, dominated the long-distance affair leading an impressive 311 laps en route to victory. This win marked one of Petty’s signature performances in the era’s premier endurance event, earning him a then-record payday of around $69,300 and highlighting his enduring skill on superspeedways amid his pursuit of another championship. The race had six cautions for 31 laps and 25 lead changes among eight drivers. David Pearson finished second in the #21 Mercury (the only other car on the lead lap), followed by Benny Parsons, Lennie Pond, and Buddy Baker.
