1977 Times 500

The Los Angeles Times 500, held on November 20, 1977, at Ontario Motor Speedway in Ontario, California, was the 30th and final race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. Richard Petty secured the pole position in the #43 STP Dodge for Petty Enterprises. The race covered 200 laps on the 2.5-mile tri-oval superspeedway, with Neil Bonnett claiming his first career superspeedway victory in the #5 Jim Stacy Racing Dodge after starting from the front row and leading a portion of the event in a breakthrough performance for the team. The top three finishers were Neil Bonnett in first, Richard Petty in second, and Cale Yarborough in third. This finished a remarkable season for Yarborough who won his second consecutive Winston Cup championship with a points total of 5,000, the highest under the era’s system. The race purse totaled $151,875, and it served as the dramatic finale to the 1977 stock car season at the now-defunct Ontario facility, known for its high-speed layout and role in closing out the schedule from 1974 to 1980.
