1954 Quaker “Sports Oddities”

The 1954 Quaker Sports Oddities is a 27-card multi-sport trading card set issued by Quaker Oats. The set highlights unusual and remarkable moments in sports history through colorful designs with a portrait of the subject on one side and an action illustration of the “oddity” on the other, plus biographical text on the back. The cards measure approximately 57 mm by 89 mm (2 1/4″ x 3 1/2″) and feature rounded corners. They were obtained as single inserts in boxes of Quaker Puffed Wheat or Puffed Rice cereal, or as a complete set via mail-in for 15 cents plus two box tops.

Two cards feature auto racing: #13 Ab Jenkins (endurance speed records on the Bonneville Salt Flats) and #14 Capt. Eddie Rickenbacker, a WWI flying ace, who competed in four Indianapolis 500 races with a best finish of 10th in 1914. In 1927, Rickenbacker led investors to purchase the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, serving as its president until 1945.
