1960 Bowman Gray Stadium (Aug)

The Bowman Gray Stadium Grand National race in August was held on Tuesday, August 23, 1960, at Bowman Gray Stadium in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. This was the 34th event of the NASCAR Grand National Series season and the third visit to the track that year, following races in April and June. The untitled short-track race took place on the quarter-mile paved oval, known as “The Madhouse” for its tight, high-contact competition. Scheduled for 200 laps, the event featured a field of 17 cars.

Glen Wood, starting from the pole in the #16 Ford for Wood Brothers Racing (qualifying at approximately 46.97 mph), once again dominated by leading all 200 laps in a wire-to-wire performance. This victory marked his third consecutive Grand National win at Bowman Gray Stadium in 1960 and further solidified his and the Wood Brothers’ success on the demanding short track. Wood crossed the finish line with a margin of victory of about one lap over the runner-up.

Lee Petty finished second in a Plymouth, completing 199 laps, followed by Junior Johnson, Rex White, and Buck Baker. This August event capped off a strong year for Glen Wood in the Grand National Series at the Stadium. He led every single lap of the 600 that were run in NASCAR Grand National competition.
