Tony Bettenhausen (September 12, 1916 – May 12, 1961) was a prominent American open‑wheel racer from Tinley Park, Illinois, whose career spanned the post‑World War II era into the early 1960s. One of the most successful drivers of his generation, Bettenhausen won multiple national championship races and captured the AAA Championship in 1951 and the USAC National Championship in 1958. Although he never won the Indianapolis 500, he made 14 starts in the race between 1946 and 1960, with his best finish being second place in 1955 and additional top‑five results in 1958 and 1959.
Bettenhausen’s talents extended beyond the Speedway as he excelled in midget and sprint car competition as well, earning a reputation as one of the hardest‑charging and most versatile drivers of his era. Tragically, his life and racing career were cut short when he was killed in a practice crash at the Indianapolis Motor Speedway in May 1961. Today he is remembered as a two‑time national champion and a foundational figure in American motorsports history.
