Duane Claude Carter (May 5, 1913 – March 7, 1993) was an American racecar driver from Fresno, California, noted for his long career in midget, sprint, and championship car racing. Carter competed in the Indianapolis 500 eleven times between 1948 and 1963, demonstrating solid consistency in a challenging era of motorsport. His best finish at Indianapolis was fourth place in 1952, and he also recorded top‑five results through relief driving roles in 1953 and 1954.
Beyond Indy, Carter was a fixture in AAA and USAC racing, praised for his skill on half‑mile ovals and dirt tracks. He won the 1950 AAA Midwest Sprint Car Championship and later served as the first Director of Competition for the United States Auto Club, where he pushed for improvements in safety and helped shape organized road racing in the United States.
