The 1979 Southeastern 500 at Bristol International Raceway was held on April 1st, as the seventh race of the NASCAR Winston Cup Series season. In a historic performance, rookie Dale Earnhardt scored his first career Cup Series victory driving the No. 2 Chevrolet for Rod Osterlund Racing. Starting ninth, Earnhardt led 163 of the 500 laps on the half-mile concrete bullring and took the lead for good on lap 474 after contact with race leader Darrell Waltrip’s No. 88 Chevrolet. He held off veteran Bobby Allison to win by about three seconds. Waltrip would finish third followed by Richard Petty and Benny Parsons. A crowd of 26,000 attended the race.
This breakthrough win on April Fools’ Day proved no joke, showcasing Earnhardt’s aggressive style and talent early in his rookie campaign—it remains the only time a rookie has won a Cup race at Bristol. Earnhardt’s victory helped solidify his path to Rookie of the Year honors that season. The race highlighted the intense competition at Bristol’s short track, with top drivers like Waltrip and Allison in contention before late-race drama decided the outcome.
