1957 British Automatic Co. (UK) “Racing and Sports Cars”

The 1957 “Racing and Sports Cars” set was issued by the British Automatic Scales Co. in the United Kingdom. It is a scarce, non-sports trading card series featuring illustrations or images of 1950s-era Formula 1, Grand Prix, and sports cars. There is no mention of specific drivers in this set.

The complete set consists of 24 cards. Each card measures approximately 38mm x 64mm (1½ x 2½ inches). These cards were not distributed through traditional packs of gum or cigarettes; instead, they were machine-vended as novelty items. They dispensed automatically from coin-operated public automatic weighing scales (common “weight and fortune” machines found in public spaces across the UK at the time), serving as a promotional collector’s item alongside a weight reading.

No special albums or inserts were produced with the set. Today, complete sets are considered vintage collectibles and occasionally appear on auction sites and trading card marketplaces.

The backs of the cards in the 1957 British Automatic Scales “Racing and Sports Cars” set are essentially identical in design and text across the entire 24-card issue, with the only difference being the individual card number (typically printed in a simple format such as “No. 1”, “No. 2”, etc.).
