1969 Programs

In the 1969 USAC Championship Car season, Mario Andretti dominated the 24-race series and captured the National Championship. He also won the Indianapolis 500 in dramatic fashion, starting from the second position in Andy Granatelli’s STP Hawk-Ford and leading 116 of the 200 laps to finish ahead of Dan Gurney, despite racing in a backup car after a practice crash.

In NASCAR’s Grand National Series, David Pearson secured his third championship (and second straight) driving the Holman-Moody Ford Torino. He won 11 of 51 races with remarkable consistency, posting 42 top-five finishes and a career-best average finish while earning a record payout for the era. LeeRoy Yarbrough took the Daytona 500, and the season still featured a handful of dirt-track events.

Internationally in Formula 1, Jackie Stewart claimed his first Drivers’ Championship in dominant style for the Tyrrell-run Matra-Ford team, winning six of the 11 races. Matra also took the Constructors’ title—the first for a French constructor—thanks to the strong Matra MS80 chassis and Cosworth DFV engine. Jacky Ickx finished runner-up in a Brabham, with Bruce McLaren third.
