The 1965 Rebel 300, held at Darlington Raceway, featured a strong field of 31 cars and drew a crowd estimated at around 15,000 spectators. Fred Lorenzen started from the pole position, but mechanical trouble dropped him from contention early. The race ultimately belonged to Junior Johnson, who dominated by leading 197 laps and took home $10,490 from a total purse of $39,375. Darel Dieringer finished second, followed by Ned Jarrett in third, Dick Hutcherson in fourth, and Bobby Johns rounding out the top five. The race had a total of six cautions for 50 laps which reduced the average speed to 111.849 mph. The Rebel 300 showcased the growing dominance of Ford teams during the mid-1960s NASCAR Grand National season.
