The 1968 Virginia 500, held on April 28 at the tight half-mile Martinsville Speedway in Virginia, delivered a classic short-track battle typical of the era. Cale Yarborough, driving the #21 Mercury for Wood Brothers Racing, started third and inherited the lead with 51 laps remaining after early dominators faded. He held off a hard-charging David Pearson by a narrow margin of about 50 yards at the finish line to score the victory after completing all 500 laps.
Richard Petty had led the most laps early in his Plymouth but ultimately fell short in the finishing order. The race showcased intense competition among the top stars of the season, with manufacturer rivalry between Ford/Mercury and Plymouth/Dodge machinery playing out on the paperclip-shaped oval known for its close, grinding action and frequent lead changes.
Yarborough’s smart strategy and strong late-run performance on the demanding Martinsville surface added another highlight to his breakout superspeedway/short-track mix that year, while Pearson continued his championship push with a solid runner-up result.
