The 1952 Chocolat L’Aiglon Champions set (also issued as Kampioenen with Dutch text) is a 50-card multi-sport collection produced in Belgium by the Chocolat L’Aiglon chocolate company as part of its Club Chocolat Aiglon promotions. Measuring 5¼” × 3⅜” (about 13.3 × 8.6 cm), the cards were distributed as free premiums inside or with purchases of L’Aiglon chocolate bars and came with a corresponding bilingual French/Dutch album for collectors to paste them in—typical of mid-century European chocolate giveaways. The set blends Belgian club soccer teams, cycling stars, boxing, athletics, and a handful of international figures.
Focusing on auto racing, the set includes three cards celebrating European auto racing heroes: #21 Luigi Villoresi, #22 Johnny Claes, and #25 Juan Manuel Fangio (the most famous and valuable card in the set, often cited as his rookie). These motorsport issues stand out amid the set’s heavy emphasis on cycling and soccer, capturing the golden era of 1950s open-wheel.
