The Dixie 400 was a NASCAR Grand National Series event held on June 7, 1964, at the 1.5-mile Atlanta International Raceway in Hampton, Georgia. The race consisted of 267 laps for a total distance of 400 miles, with an average speed of 112.535 mph and three cautions for 63 laps.
A field of 35 cars took the green flag before a crowd of 40,000 fans at the high-banked superspeedway. Ned Jarrett drove his #11 Bondy Long Ford to victory, starting from the 17th position and leading 66 laps to win by a half-lap margin. Richard Petty finished second in his #43 Plymouth after leading 42 laps, while Paul Goldsmith placed third in a Plymouth. Other notables included Darel Dieringer, Rex White, Jim Paschal, and Bobby Isaac, though pole-sitter Junior Johnson was sidelined early by mechanical issues.
The event showcased intense competition and the growing speed and reliability of mid-1960s Ford and Plymouth machinery on one of NASCAR’s premier superspeedways. It remains a classic mid-season race from the sport’s early era.
