1951 North Wilkesboro Spring

On April 29, 1951, the seventh race of the NASCAR Grand National Series season brought competitors to the .625-mile dirt oval of North Wilkesboro Speedway, where 7,500 fans turned out to witness a dominant performance. A full field of 38 cars took the green flag, led by pole-sitter Fonty Flock, who quickly established himself as the class of the field. From the drop of the green, Flock controlled the race entirely, leading all 150 laps on the challenging dirt surface and never relinquishing the top spot. His flawless drive left the rest of the field to battle for position behind him, as no one could mount a serious challenge. At the finish, Tim Flock secured second place to give the Flock family a one-two finish, followed by Lee Petty in third. Bill Holland came home fourth, and Donald Thomas completed the top five. The race stood as a showcase of Fonty Flock’s skill and consistency, turning a pole position start into a wire-to-wire victory in one of the most decisive races of the 1951 season.
