In 1953, the AAA Championship Car season was highlighted by the Indianapolis 500 on May 30. Bill Vukovich dominated the race in brutal heat, leading 195 of the 200 laps to score a commanding victory over Art Cross and cement his reputation as one of America’s premier open-wheel drivers. Sam Hanks would clinch the Championship driving the Bardahl Special.
The NASCAR Grand National season featured 37 races, mostly on dirt tracks. Herb Thomas won his second championship in his own #92 Hudson Hornet, becoming the first repeat champion in series history with 12 victories. Lee Petty finished second in the final standings, with Dick Rathmann and Buck Baker also strong throughout the year.
Internationally, Alberto Ascari claimed his second consecutive Formula One World Championship driving for Ferrari. In sports car racing, Jaguar celebrated at the 24 Hours of Le Mans as Duncan Hamilton and Tony Rolt won with an average speed over 105 mph.
