“Ace Drivers of the Motor Track” was a 1936 collectible booklet issued in the United Kingdom by Amalgamated Press as part of The Champion story paper’s “Sports Wallet” promotion. Readers collected sets of small black-and-white photo cards (approximately 44 x 65 mm) that folded out concertina-style inside the individual themed booklets.
The Ace Drivers booklet featured six leading British motor racing stars of the era: Malcolm Campbell (famous for his Blue Bird land-speed record cars), John Cobb, Captain George Eyston, Earl Howe, Brian Lewis, and Raymond Mays. It celebrated the thrilling world of 1930s Grand Prix racing, track events, and high-speed record attempts that captured the public imagination just before the Second World War.
The individual concertina booklets (including Ace Drivers) were designed to be inserted into a separate large orange cardboard Champion Sports Wallet, which was given away with the paper. Aimed at the magazine’s young male readership, these fragile paper cards were part of a larger series covering popular sports. Today they remain a nostalgic snapshot of pre-war British motorsport fandom and Amalgamated Press’s clever promotional marketing.
