1968 Northern 300

The 1968 Northern 300, contested July 14 at the one-mile Trenton Speedway in New Jersey, attracted 16,800 fans for a 36-car field.

LeeRoy Yarbrough started from the pole in the #98 Junior Johnson Ford after qualifying at 103.717 mph and thoroughly dominated the 300-lap race, leading 285 laps. He finished a full lap ahead of David Pearson, with Bobby Allison third, Charlie Glotzbach fourth, and Pete Hamilton fifth.

The event, slowed by five cautions for 28 laps, ran 3 hours, 22 minutes, and 4 seconds at an average speed of 89.079 mph. Yarbrough earned $2,900 for the win. Points leader Bobby Isaac, who had been running near the front, blew an engine with 50 laps remaining and finished 16th, seeing his championship lead over Pearson trimmed to just 50 points.
