The 1972 Northern 300, held July 16 at the 1.5-mile kidney-shaped Trenton Speedway, drew 20,000 fans for a 33-car field and marked the final Grand National appearance at the track.
Bobby Isaac won the pole in the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge at 133.126 mph. Bobby Allison, starting second in the #12 Richard Howard Chevrolet, won by 1.4 seconds over Isaac after averaging 114.030 mph in a race slowed by five cautions for 21 laps. Richard Petty finished third, followed by Fred Lorenzen and Cecil Gordon.
Allison earned $7,900 for his fifth victory of the season.
