The 1979 CRC Chemicals Rebel 500, the eighth race of the NASCAR Winston Cup season, was held on April 8 at Darlington Raceway before roughly 50,000 fans. A 36-car field contested 367 laps. Donnie Allison earned the pole in the #1 Hoss Ellington Chevrolet with a speed of 154.797 mph. Darrell Waltrip started second in the #88 DiGard Gatorade Chevrolet and won by half a car length over Richard Petty after the pair traded the lead four times on the final lap.
