1962 Atlanta 500

The 1962 Atlanta 500 was held on June 10, 1962, at Atlanta International Raceway in Hampton, Georgia. The race was scheduled for 334 laps (500 miles) but was shortened to 219 laps due to heavy rain, with approximately 46 drivers in the field. Fred Lorenzen started seventh, led 51 laps, and was declared the winner driving his Ford for the Holman‑Moody team. The top five finishers were Fred Lorenzen, Banjo Matthews, Bobby Johns, Fireball Roberts, and Troy Ruttman. The race featured multiple lead changes and three cautions covering 61 laps. Like many events of the era, mechanical retirements and track conditions played a key role, and Lorenzen’s victory highlighted both driver skill and team reliability in the 1962 NASCAR Grand National Series.
