Lennie Pond captured the pole with a qualifying speed of 105.094 mph in the #54 W.I.N. Chevrolet for Harry Ranier. Cale Yarborough, starting second in the #11 1st National City Travelers Checks Oldsmobile for Junior Johnson & Associates, scored the victory by two laps over Lennie Pond. Richard Petty finished third, followed by Dave Marcis and Neil Bonnett. Yarborough collected $11,215 for the win and led all 420 laps. He averaged 87.541 mph in a race slowed by two cautions for 22 laps.
