1928 Amatller (ES) Automovilismo

The 1928 Chocolate Amatller Automovilismo collection, issued in Spain by the chocolate manufacturer Amatller, consists of 23 cards measuring approximately 7.5 × 10 cm. Distributed as premiums with Amatller chocolate, the cards feature an illustration of each racing personality and the subject’s name on the front, while the reverse carries the card number and a brief biographical sketch in Spanish.

The collection presents an unusually international and eclectic group of racing personalities, ranging from Spanish competitors and leading European Grand Prix stars to land-speed-record pioneers. One of its most distinctive inclusions is Lilí Álvarez, who is better known as one of Spain’s greatest tennis players—she reached the Wimbledon final three consecutive times from 1926 through 1928—but was also an accomplished automobile racer who won the 1924 Catalonia Automobile Championship. Of particular interest to American collectors, the set includes four Indianapolis 500 winners: Jules Goux (1913), René Thomas (1914), Dario Resta (1916), and Jimmy Murphy (1922). This remarkable combination of Grand Prix drivers, Indianapolis winners, land-speed-record figures, and an accomplished female racer, presented in an attractive large format, makes Automovilismo a uniquely diverse and historically important prewar Spanish racing-card issue.
