1961 Topps Sports Cars

The 1961 Topps Sports Cars set was one of the more distinctive automotive-themed trading card releases of the early 1960s, produced by Topps Company during a period when performance automobiles and international sports cars were rapidly growing in popularity with American enthusiasts. The complete set consisted of 66 oversized “Tall Boy” cards measuring approximately 2½ by 4 11/16 inches, with cards distributed in wax packs with bubble gum and a license plate sticker. Featuring colorized images of some of the world’s most desirable automobiles, the set highlighted exotic European and American performance machines, with 12 cards specifically depicting competition-oriented racing cars, giving the issue particular appeal to motorsport collectors. Card backs included technical specifications, manufacturer information, and brief descriptive text, while the unusually large format made the cards especially prone to edge and corner wear, making high-grade examples increasingly difficult to locate today.
