1963 Marhoefer Meats “Review of Famous Racing Cars”

The 1963 Marhoefer Meats “Review of Famous Racing Cars” is a distinctive 10-card set issued by the Muncie, Indiana meatpacking company as a promotional insert. Measuring 131 mm × 100 mm (5 3/16″ x 3 15/16″) with rounded corners, the thick, rigid cards place the historic race car firmly at the center of attention rather than the driver.

The front of each card shows the car accompanied by two flags. The reverse features a neat arrangement of seven racing flags, each with a short explanation of its meaning, plus double-spaced technical specifications for the car depicted.

Marhoefer distributed the unnumbered cards inside packages of its hot dogs and sausages. As a result, the great majority of surviving examples carry characteristic grease or oil stains on the back from prolonged contact with the meat products. Unstained cards are scarce and highly prized by collectors, as most of the set spent time at the bottom of a pack of wieners.
