On April 4, 1954, the seventh race of the NASCAR Grand National season was held at North Wilkesboro Speedway — a 0.625-mile dirt track. A crowd of 5,500 fans watched a 24-car field take the green flag.
Gober Sosebee earned the pole position with a qualifying speed of 78.698 mph. Sosebee led a race-high 112 laps, but a broken spindle ended his day. Dick Rathmann took over the lead on lap 115 and went on to dominate the rest of the 160-lap event.
Rathmann won the race by 20 seconds over runner-up Herb Thomas. Joe Eubanks finished third, Curtis Turner placed fourth, and Lee Petty rounded out the top five. The victory marked Rathmann’s 12th career NASCAR win.
It was a hard-fought battle on the dusty North Wilkesboro dirt that highlighted both early dominance and mechanical misfortune.
