1956 Hickory Speedway (May)

The May 12, 1956 Hickory Speedway race was the 16th race of the 1956 NASCAR Grand National Series, held on the 0.4-mile dirt oval at Hickory Speedway in North Carolina. A crowd of approximately 4,500 fans watched 24 cars compete in the 200-lap event.

Speedy Thompson, driving the #300 Carl Kiekhaefer Chrysler 300, won the pole with a speed of 67.447 mph and led all 200 laps to score a dominant victory. He won with an average race speed of 59.442 mph and earned $1,100 for the win. Billy Myers finished second, followed by Buck Baker in third, Herb Thomas in fourth, and Gwyn Stanley in fifth. The race ended under caution.

This victory marked the Kiekhaefer team’s eighth consecutive win, continuing their remarkable dominance during the 1956 season.
