The International Sweepstakes 200 at Bowman Gray Stadium was held on Sunday, June 26, 1960, in Winston-Salem. This NASCAR Grand National Series event was the 22nd race of the 1960 season and the second of three visits to the quarter-mile paved oval that year. The race was scheduled for 200 laps (approximately 50 miles) and featured a competitive field that included sports cars such as an MG and Corvette.
Glen Wood, driving the #16 Ford for Wood Brothers Racing and starting third, delivered another masterful performance by leading all 200 laps in a wire-to-wire victory. This marked his second consecutive Grand National win at Bowman Gray in 1960, underscoring his dominance on the demanding track and boosting the Wood Brothers’ reputation.
Lee Petty finished second in a Plymouth, completing all 200 laps but trailing Wood by about half a lap at the checkered flag. Rex White took third in a Chevrolet, followed by Richard Petty in fourth and Ned Jarrett in fifth. The highest finishing sports car was Jack Hart and his Triumph which finished 14th.
This mid-season event highlighted the intense, fender-to-fender battles typical of Bowman Gray Stadium, while Glen Wood’s flawless run further cemented his status as a short-track specialist and contributed to an impressive sweep of the track’s Grand National races for him in 1960.
