On April 15, 1960, a crowd of 7,460 fans filled Hickory Speedway in North Carolina for the Hickory 250 on the half-mile dirt oval. Rex White captured the pole position with a speed of 71.08 mph in a 23-car field. Joe Weatherly, driving a Holman-Moody Ford, took the lead and went on to win the race by a narrow margin of just three car lengths over second-place finisher Ned Jarrett.
Weatherly earned $800 for the victory and completed the 250 laps at an average speed of 66.347 mph. Richard Petty finished third, with Bob Welborn and Tom Pistone rounding out the top five. The win further highlighted the strength of the factory-supported Ford teams early in the 1960 NASCAR Grand National season.
