The 1960 Wilkes 200 (also referred to as the Wilkes 320), the 41st race of the 44-race 1960 NASCAR Grand National Series season, was held on Sunday, October 2 at North Wilkesboro Speedway in North Wilkesboro, North Carolina.
A field of 24 cars took to the 0.625-mile dirt oval for 320 laps (200 miles). Rex White, driving his own #4 Chevrolet, captured the pole position with a qualifying speed of 93.399 mph and went on to dominate late in the race.
Cotton Owens was leading when he crashed on lap 241, handing the lead over to White, who pulled away to win by a full half lap over runner-up Junior Johnson. Possum Jones finished third, followed by Joe Weatherly in fourth and Buck Baker in fifth. White’s victory came at an average speed of 77.444 mph and earned him $2,200. The race was slowed by five cautions.
