1961 Yankee 500

On June 17, 1961, Norwood Arena in Massachusetts hosted the Yankee 500, a 500-lap NASCAR Grand National race on the tight 1/4-mile paved track. Eighteen cars started the event, with Rex White winning the pole position at a speed of 53.827 mph. White led the first 125 laps, but Emanuel Zervakis took control of the race when he passed Ned Jarrett on lap 263 and led the remaining distance for his second victory of the 1961 season.

Rex White finished second, about a quarter of a lap behind the winner. Ned Jarrett came home third, followed by Buck Baker in fourth and Jim Reed in fifth. Thanks to only one caution during the entire race, the event ran at a strong average speed of 53.827 mph.
