The 1965 Dixie 400 was held June 13th, at Atlanta International Raceway before a crowd of 25,000, as the 25th race of the NASCAR Grand National Series season. Fred Lorenzen started from the pole and was an early contender, but the race evolved into a test of durability and strategy over the 1.54-mile oval. There were eight caution periods that slowed the pace, and the event ultimately ended under caution with an average speed of 110.120 mph. Marvin Panch, driving the famed Wood Brothers No. 21 Ford, claimed the victory, followed by Darel Dieringer in second and Ned Jarrett in third. Junior Johnson finished fourth, with Buddy Baker rounding out the top five, capping off a competitive and caution-filled afternoon in Georgia.
