1966 Wilkes 400

The 1966 Wilkes 400, held at North Wilkesboro Speedway, drew a crowd of 15,000 fans to witness a competitive 35-car field in what proved to be a dramatic and attrition-filled NASCAR race. Junior Johnson, starting from the pole with a qualifying speed of 103.069 mph, asserted early dominance by leading the first 76 laps. However, his strong run came to an abrupt end when his engine failed on lap 129, opening the door for others to challenge at the front.

Fred Lorenzen then took control, pacing the field for an impressive 178 laps and looking like the driver to beat. Yet, like Johnson before him, Lorenzen’s hopes were dashed by a blown motor on lap 306, handing the lead to Dick Hutcherson in the potent #29 Holman-Moody Ford. Hutcherson capitalized on the attrition and maintained a steady, mistake-free run to secure the victory, crossing the finish line 12 seconds ahead of runner-up David Pearson. Paul Lewis finished third, followed by Jim Paschal in fourth and James Hylton in fifth.

The race was slowed by five caution periods totaling 52 laps, contributing to an average speed of 89.012 mph over the 400-lap distance. Hutcherson pocketed $4,325 for the win, marking his third victory of the season and the 12th of his NASCAR career. The 1966 Wilkes 400 highlighted the mechanical fragility of the era’s high-powered machines, as multiple frontrunners fell victim to engine troubles while Hutcherson’s consistent drive in the Holman-Moody machine proved decisive in a race defined by survival as much as speed.
