Richard Petty drove his #43 Plymouth to victory in his first-ever win at Rockingham, finishing a full lap ahead of runner-up Buddy Baker. The race turned into a fierce duel between the two, as Petty led nine times for 249 laps while Baker led five times for 214 laps. Dick Hutcherson finished third, followed by Cale Yarborough in fourth and Darel Dieringer in fifth. Petty earned $16,175 for the win as the event averaged 104.682 mph.
The race was slowed by nine cautions for 45 laps, and attrition was heavy — only 14 cars were running at the end of the race. A slow pit stop for Baker proved costly, allowing Petty to pull ahead for good. This marked Petty’s 11th victory of the season and pushed him to the top of the NASCAR Grand National standings, with a 90-point lead over James Hylton.
