In the 1967 Old Dominion 500 at Martinsville Speedway on September 24, a 40-car field drew 13,600 fans. Cale Yarborough took the pole with a speed of 77.386 mph in the Wood Brothers Ford but retired early with engine trouble after just 120 laps. Richard Petty started fifth in his Petty Enterprises Plymouth and won by four full laps over Dick Hutcherson. David Pearson finished third, followed by James Hylton and Jim Paschal.
The race featured seven cautions for 43 laps, with Petty averaging 69.605 mph and earning $4,400. Paul Goldsmith dominated the middle stages, building a two-lap lead while leading 286 laps, but blew a differential on lap 306. Petty inherited the lead and controlled the rest of the way for his ninth consecutive victory and 26th win of the season (part of his eventual record 27-win campaign and a 10-race winning streak). Swede Savage impressed with a sixth-place finish in just his second Grand National start, driving a Holman-Moody Ford.
