1967 Northern 300

The 1967 Northern 300, held July 9 at the one-mile Trenton Speedway in New Jersey, drew 19,500 fans for a 36-car field in what was Race 29 of the NASCAR Grand National season.

Richard Petty started from the pole after qualifying at 101.208 mph in his #43 Petty Enterprises Plymouth and dominated the 300-lap event. He led 244 laps in a race-long battle with Darel Dieringer’s #26 Junior Johnson Ford that featured eight lead changes. Petty held off Dieringer by 28 seconds at the finish, with Jim Paschal third, Paul Goldsmith fourth, and Elmo Langley fifth.

The race, slowed by a caution for three laps, lasted 3 hours, 8 minutes, and 50 seconds at an average speed of 95.322 mph. Petty collected $4,350 for the victory, his 61st career win.
