The 1969 Mason-Dixon 300 was a historic 300-lap NASCAR Grand National Series race held on July 6, 1969, at the newly opened Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware. It marked the inaugural race on the high-banked one-mile concrete oval, drawing a crowd of 22,000 fans to witness the birth of what would later become known as “The Monster Mile.”
A strong 32-car field took the green flag, with David Pearson winning the pole position at a speed of 130.430 mph. The race featured seven lead changes among three drivers. LeeRoy Yarbrough dominated early, leading over 100 laps, but his day ended dramatically on lap 221 when he blew a tire and crashed hard into the wall. Richard Petty, driving his #43 Ford for Petty Enterprises, took control and led 150 laps to win the race by a commanding six full laps over runner-up Sonny Hutchins. James Hylton, John Sears, and Elmo Langley rounded out the top five. Petty posted an average speed of 115.772 mph, with the race slowed by four cautions for 27 laps. He earned $4,725 for the victory — his fifth win of the 1969 season.
This dominant performance by Petty in Dover’s very first NASCAR race helped cement the track’s place in stock car racing history.
