1971 Daytona 500

In the 1971 Daytona 500 at Daytona International Speedway on February 14, an estimated 80,000 fans packed the stands for the 40-car field. A.J. Foyt grabbed the pole with a speed of 182.744 mph in the Wood Brothers Mercury. Richard Petty won his third Daytona 500—becoming the first three-time winner—by 10 seconds over teammate Buddy Baker in the #11 Petty Enterprises Dodge. A.J. Foyt finished third, followed by David Pearson and Fred Lorenzen.

The race featured seven cautions for 44 laps, with an average speed of 144.462 mph over the 200 laps. Petty earned $45,450 for the victory, his 120th career win. Foyt led late but ran out of fuel with 39 laps to go, forcing a costly pit stop that handed the advantage to Petty. The Thursday 125-mile qualifiers were won by David Pearson and Pete Hamilton.
