1971 Northern 300

The 1971 Northern 300, held July 18 at the 1.5-mile Trenton Speedway, attracted 15,000 fans for a 40-car field.

Friday Hassler won the pole in the #39 Hassler Chevrolet at 129.134 mph. Richard Petty, starting second in his Petty Enterprises Plymouth, dominated en route to victory, leading 128 laps and finishing 23 seconds ahead of Buddy Baker. Bobby Allison placed third, followed by Dave Marcis and Pete Hamilton.

The race, slowed by three cautions for 12 laps, averaged 120.347 mph over 200 laps. Petty earned $6,760 for his third consecutive win and 132nd career Grand National victory.
