The 1972 Mason-Dixon 500 was a 500-lap NASCAR Winston Cup Series race held on June 4, 1972, at Dover Downs International Speedway in Delaware. The event attracted an attendance of 27,000 fans for a full 40-car field on the challenging one-mile concrete oval.
Bobby Isaac captured the pole position with a speed of 130.809 mph. The race was slowed by three cautions for a total of 25 laps. Bobby Allison, driving the #12 Howard-Johnson’s Chevrolet dominated much of the afternoon and went on to win by a full lap over Richard Petty with an average speed of 118.019 mph. LeeRoy Yarbrough finished third, followed by Jackie Oliver in fourth and John Sears in fifth. Allison earned $14,625 for the victory — his third win of the 1972 season.
This marked Allison’s second consecutive Mason-Dixon 500 victory at Dover and further demonstrated his strength on the Monster Mile during one of his strongest career seasons.
