1975 Gwyn Staley 400

The 1975 Gwyn Staley 400 was held on April 6 at North Wilkesboro Speedway, drawing a crowd of 15,000 fans to the .625-mile North Carolina short track. A field of 28 cars took the green flag, with Darrell Waltrip earning the pole position at a speed of 105.520 mph.

The race featured four cautions that slowed the action for 36 laps, but Richard Petty put on a masterclass in the #43 STP Dodge. The King led 310 laps and cruised to victory by a full three laps over the rest of the field. Cale Yarborough finished second, followed by Buddy Baker in third, Dave Marcis in fourth, and Lennie Pond in fifth. Petty’s commanding performance produced an average race speed of 90.009 mph.

This dominant win marked another step in Petty’s march toward the 1975 Winston Cup championship, reinforcing his reputation as nearly unbeatable on short tracks during this era.
