On September 28, 1975, Martinsville Speedway hosted the Old Dominion 500 for the NASCAR Winston Cup Series. A crowd of 25,000 watched a 30-car field take the green flag on the .525-mile short track.
Cale Yarborough won the pole with a speed of 86.199 mph. In a competitive race slowed by seven cautions for 40 laps, Dave Marcis drove the #71 K&K Insurance Dodge to his first career Grand National victory. He held off Benny Parsons by just three seconds to win $14,500 and average 75.819 mph over the 500 laps. Bobby Allison finished third, followed by Richard Childress and Richie Panch.
Both Cale Yarborough and Darrell Waltrip had strong chances to win but were sidelined by mechanical issues in the second half of the race. Marcis’s breakthrough triumph at Martinsville came in his 223rd Grand National start.
