The Virginia 500 was held at Martinsville Speedway on April 27, 1975, before a track record crowd of approximately 34,000 spectators. The event was the ninth race of the NASCAR Grand National season and featured a 30-car starting field. Benny Parsons won the pole position with a qualifying speed of 84.182 mph, while Richard Petty started sixth. The 500-lap race included eighteen lead changes among five drivers and was slowed by four caution periods for a total of 58 laps. Despite the interruptions, the race produced an average speed of 69.282 mph.
Richard Petty took control during the second half of the race and led 240 laps on his way to victory. He crossed the finish line approximately eight seconds ahead of Darrell Waltrip to earn the $18,000 winner’s purse. Cale Yarborough finished third, followed by Bobby Allison and Dave Marcis. The victory added another Martinsville triumph to Petty’s record during the 1975 season and strengthened his position in the Grand National championship standings as the series headed into its tenth race.
